Mining contributes 12 percent to GDP

The contribution of the mining sector to the national GDP has increased from 11 percent in the first quarter of 2025 to 12 percent in the second quarter, a measure that shows the strengthening of the sector.

Minister of Minerals, Antony Mavunde, giving a report on President Samia Suluhu Hassan's 100 days, said the contribution has increased rapidly compared to 6.8 percent in 2020 and 10.1 percent in 2024.

He said that between July and December 2025, 14.66 tons of gold worth Shs. 3.75 trillion were sold in gold refining plants in the country, while until December 2025 the Government through BoT purchased 17.03 tons worth Shs. 4.97 trillion, a move that strengthened the National gold reserves.

Mavunde added that from November 2025 to January 25, 2026, the Ministry of Minerals collected Shs. 311.80 billion, equivalent to 111 percent of the target, and from July to December 2025, it collected Shs. 653.94 billion, equivalent to 108.99 percent of the target for the period.

These achievements are due to improvements in the law, licensing management, regulation of the mining trade and the fight against mining smuggling.
